No, not Sandy and Danny from Grease, although the song has been stuck in my head for a while for some reasons. It was Sandy, the devastating storm that swept through the Northeast this past week. It was the very first natural disaster that somewhat impacted us and i hope it will be the only one that London will experience :)
The media did an awesome job to inform us with updated info and putting me at stress with how bad the storm will be. Our plan was to do grocery shopping and stock our kitchen with everything we possibly needed.
Sunday night, Deonn and his mom just got back from New York. They couldn't catch the bus or plane since everything in NY shut down that afternoon in preparation for the storm. They were able to get a rental car and made it back to VA that evening. I was glad that they got out to NY that day and not a minute later.
We all then went to a concert and took London with us. It was a charity event that Stacey has been planning for a while. I usually like her events, last year was pretty awesome with all the dancing and singing from C4 Performing Art , especially the hors d'oeuvres they were serving: yummiest sliders ever :)
This year was a joint effort with other organizations to support breast cancer awareness. London was asleep at first but woke up after intermission. She was so into watching the ballet performance from VA School of Ballet. Watching those ballerinas danced made me want to enroll London to ballet lessons immediately. She loves dancing these days and always twirling around the house. I can't wait until we do.
Not just ballet, London enjoyed other performances at the concert and even grooved with the music. It was our first time taking her to a concert and it was success.
The weather was getting ugly when we were leaving, it was rainy and very windy. I started to wonder if i'd go to work the next day or if London's school would be open. I didn't need to wonder long, we received email from her school letting us know it will be closed due to the storm; and an email from work stating no work tomorrow. All of a sudden, the weekend has been extended.
Monday morning was gloomy and cold. So cold it felt weird since we've been enjoying the mild temperature of 70 degree. So a sudden 45 degree seemed really cold. Deonn went grocery shopping and came home with weeks worth of food. We had to freeze some of London's milk since he bought too much. The fridge was stocked and we were all set for the storm. For the rest of the day, were were just waiting for the storm. I cooked a pot of soup, and we had plenty of food to munch while waiting for Sandy. I started to question whether the media has hyped this too much since it didn't look too bad outside. Then my question was answered: our power went out. I thought it would be only a minute and would come back, but it was it. We were in darkness and the cold. We didn't buy candles since we didn't think we would lose power. So we used what we have in the house and Deonn had to run to the store to buy candles and ice (to store all the foods we had bought in coolers)
London was a bit weary with a dark house at first. She clung on to me and didn't want to let go. There was not a lot of thunders or lightnings so it wasn't too bad. After a while, she got comfortable with the darkness and played hide and seek with me. At one point, she couldn't find me since the house was not very well lit, she was crying running from one room to another. That reminded me of my childhood, i got lost one time while we were visiting my aunt. She lived in an apartment building as well, and i was crying walking from one apartment to another but couldn't find hers since they all looked the same. It was a horrifying feeling. :(
Once Deonn got back from the store, we just hung out in the living room and ate Doritos ( nacho cheese). London was crunching them :) We decided to stay put for the night and would make a decision to either go to a hotel or to my parents the next day. The house started to get very cold, we all huddled in the bed, London was all warmed and tucked in the middle :) In the middle of the night, she got extremely warm for some reason, i thought she was having a fever, but she wasn't. I'm still not sure what that was.
We woke up on Tuesday morning freezing. Even the comforter felt cold to the touch. We put coats and hats on just as if we were outside and all went to the kitchen to cook breakfast. The stove was working since its a gas stove. Deonn put a blanket on the floor and we camped there. It really felt like we were camping, there was no power, no hot water and we were cold. So it was a check on our to do list: London's first camping trip (in door).
Afterward, we moved to the hotel where Deonn's mom has been staying. We packed 2 whole suitcases of stuff and a couple more bags of London's items: toys, books, foods, etc... It looked as if we were traveling somewhere for a week. Then i remembered that we lived on the top floor of our apartment building and elevators didnt' work. Walking down all those steps and carrying a squirming baby were quite challenging. The stairway was suddenly like a highway with nonstop up and down traffic. The lobby was lit with generator and a lot of people gathered to charge their stuff and hung out. Maybe it was like a party there last night.
For the rest of the day, we just hung out in the hotel room and watched the news. The storm has done so much damage and it was devastating watching where it hit the hardest. We were really spared by Sandy.
The power came back on that evening and we returned home. We never appreciate the normal things until they are gone: so true. I love our apartment, with power :) There was no hot water until the next morning but it was nice to sleep on a warm bed.
We survived this storm, Deonn did such a great job getting us all safe and sound. I appreciated him running up and down those stairs so many times, carrying those bags of ice :( He really took good care of us.
